The Ultimate Guide to NW Michigan
COLUMN BY M'LYNN HARTWELL
Michigan's "Sunset Side" is blessed with unique hiking trails, remote areas of Lake Michigan, and scenery every naturalist dreams about. A hike on these trails is not just a walk down a dirt path, but the opportunity to see some of Michigan's most spectacular natural jewels.

The scenery is as varied as anywhere in the country, and so are the trails: From coastal sand dunes to towering pines and hardwoods; from remote Lake Michigan beaches to wilderness inland lakes, all of these wonders of Nature can be reached by well-marked hiking trails.

Here is one of our personal favorites.

LEGS INN

Legs Inn

The northwestern most corner of the Lower Peninsula is home to a number of unique spots, not the least of which is Legs Inn, the offbeat restaurant and bar that draws locals and residents from miles around for its Polish food and summer-night music.

Located in Cross Village, where Father Marquette landed 300 years ago, Legs Inn is a blend of rustic and camp, with furniture fashioned from sticks and logs and outdoor service overlooking Lake Michigan.

Getting to Legs Inn is an experience in itself. Whether you drive on County Road 66 from I-75, or US-31, or travel north from Petoskey and Harbor Springs via M-119 is considered one of the most beautiful drives in the nation as if follows the Lake Michigan Shoreline high above the lake and through hardwood forests.
