The Ultimate Guide to NW Michigan
HUMAN POWERED TRANSPORTATION

Pedaling a bicycle or rolling along on inline skates are terrific ways to experience the beautiful sights, aromas and sounds of Northern Michigan.

Guidebooks and bike rentals ($12-15/day) are commonly available at most bike shops and at most regional resorts. In the Traverse City area the (biking, inline skating and hiking) TART: Traverse Area Recreational Trail stretches from M-72 at Acme through the lakeshore area of downtown Traverse City.

The Michigan Bicycle Touring organizes guided bike tours for all ages and abilities. If off-road pedaling is more your speed, check out the Michigan Mountain Biking Association (MMBA) who can guide you to some great off-road bicycling, and inform you of events.

The League of Michigan Bicyclists organizes several rides throughout the state, conducts bike safety programs, and keeps tabs on Michigan cycling laws and regulations.

Check out the Traverse Area Critical Mass and Social-Activism schedule.

Our TraverseArea.com staff and our site guests like to  visit offbeat and out-of-the-way places and tell you all about them in our exclusive Off the Grid.

Remember Please Leave No Trace of your visit!

TART :: TRAVERSE AREA RECREATIONAL TRAIL

The Traverse Area Recreation Trail, known as the TART trail, stretches from the west side of Traverse City along the West Bay shoreline, through Clinch Park and adjacent to the downtown shopping areas before continuing southeast toward Acme, the State Park and the hotel zone.

Bike racks are located next to the trail downtown and the beach areas along Grandview Parkway. During the peak summer months and festival weeks, it's often faster and far more fun to bypass the traffic congestion and peddle from spot to spot.

Complimentary TART Trail maps are available at the Traverse City Convention and Visitors Center, local bike shops, and many hotels and stores.

A grant from Traverse City Rotary Charities and funds from the City of Traverse City and Grand Traverse County paid for Phase One of the TART from West Bay to Parsons. The State of Michigan funded Phase Two, completed last October from Parsons to Bunker Hill Road. The county has designed and underwritten Phase Three, east to M-72.

For information about TART, call 933-8278, or write to TART, P.O. Box 252, Traverse City, 49685-0252.
